Luis B. Ortega braided rawhide, five-piece collection, custom made for Lillian E. Goedert (1929-2013) of Hesperia, California. Lillian ordered this set directly from Luis at the Southern California horseshow. The fine set is comprised of:
a) Ortega Headstall: Double headband with gaucho stitch, five buttons on each cheek, red accents, fine condition and patina;
b) Ortega Show Reins: 3/8” reins with ½” romal. Reins measure 43” and romal measures 30”. Adored with natural, tea-stained and red knots in varying dimensions. Inside popper carved with the initials “LEG” for Lillian E. Goedert. Fine condition;
c) Eduardo Grijalva (EG*) silver mounted bit;
d) Ortega Show Hobbles: Braided natural rawhide with center red stitching and red interweaves on the buttons. Excellent condition;
e) Ortega Signed Reata: All natural rawhide 3/8” in diameter measuring 26’ overall with red interweaves. Signed on the hondo L B ORTEGA on one side and LILLIAN G on the other. Excellent condition.

Luis B. Ortega, extra impressive, all natural flat braided rawhide split ear headstall. Made with 3 strands that are whip stitched together with great knots and all in unused condition. Also included, a silver inlaid CA spade bit with thing engraved lip bar and old chains.

Important Ortega quirt, 29” long, 16-strand natural rawhide body with unique dark brown buttons and red interweaves. The different colors of un-dyed rawhide are derived by the natural colors of different cattle breeds. Marked inside the popper "O-P LUIS ORTEGA" & "TAGGART 9/80". The O-P represents both dual branches of Luis’ family -- Ortega & Peralta. Made in 1980 for Lloyd W. Taggart of Las Vegas, Nevada and Cody, Wyoming.
PROVENANCE: Lot includes a letter dated and signed 1990 Letter from Luis Ortega to High Noon Western Americana documenting the origin and authenticity of the quirt.

Lloyd W. Taggart (1919-2002) served as president of the Federated Employers of Las Vegas, and board of trustee member of the National Cowboy Hall of Fame and Western Heritage Center in Oklahoma City. He also served on the University of Wyoming Alumni Association Board, UW Art Museum Board, College of Business Advisory Council, and UW Campus Advisory Board. In 1988, he was honored as a UW Distinguished Alumni for his many years of outstanding leadership, service and career accomplishments.
